Gameplay

How do I form words?

Swipe (or drag) across adjacent letters on the 10×10 grid. Letters can connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — but you can't reuse the same cell in one word. Lift your finger to submit the word.

What's the minimum word length?

Words must be at least 3 letters long. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and standalone letters don't count.

How does scoring work?

Each word scores the sum of its letter values (similar to Scrabble), multiplied by a length bonus:

LengthMultiplierTime added
3 letters×1+3s
4 letters×1.5+6s
5 letters×2+10s
6 letters×3+18s
7 letters×4.5+25s
8 letters×6+40s
9+ letters×8+60s

Rare letters like J, Q, X, and Z carry high base values, so words containing them score disproportionately well.

Can I use the same word twice?

No. Each word can only be scored once per game. If you try to trace a word you've already found, it will be rejected. Different paths to the same word count as the same word.

A word I tried isn't being accepted — why?

There are a few possible reasons:

  • The word isn't in our dictionary for the selected language.
  • It's a proper noun, abbreviation, or hyphenated compound.
  • You've already found it this game.
  • The letters aren't actually adjacent on the grid.

If you're sure a common word should be accepted, email us at hello@decagram.ca — we do expand the dictionary based on feedback.

Game Modes

What's the difference between Classic and Rush?

Classic starts with 60 seconds and each word you find adds time back — games can last many minutes if you're on a streak.

Rush is a hard 60-second cap. No time extensions. It's a pure burst mode for players who want a fixed time pressure.

How does Daily mode work?

Every day at midnight (in your local timezone) a new board is generated. Everyone playing Daily that day gets exactly the same grid, so the leaderboard is a true comparison. You get one attempt — there's no replaying the daily board once you've started.

Does Zen mode count toward rankings?

No. Zen is an unranked practice mode with no timer. It's a great way to explore the grid, learn new words, or just play without pressure. Your scores in Zen don't appear on any leaderboard.

Account & Data

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play all modes without signing in. An account is only needed if you want your scores saved to the global leaderboard. Sign in with Apple or Google — no password required.

I switched phones — how do I restore my progress?

Sign in with the same Apple or Google account you used originally. Your username, scores, and stats are tied to your account and will sync automatically once you're logged in on the new device.

How do I delete my account?

Email us at hello@decagram.ca with the subject "Delete my account" and we'll permanently remove your account and all associated data within 30 days. You can also find the option in Settings → Account → Delete Account inside the app.

Can I change my username?

Yes — go to Settings → Account → Edit Username in the app. You can change it once every 30 days.

Technical

The app crashed or a score wasn't saved — what should I do?

First, make sure the app is updated to the latest version. If the problem persists, email us at hello@decagram.ca with your device model, OS version, and a description of what happened. Screenshots help a lot.

What languages are supported?

Decagram currently supports English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Each language uses its own letter frequency distribution and dictionary. You can switch languages in Settings → Language — the board will regenerate.

Does Decagram work offline?

Classic, Rush, and Zen modes work fully offline — the dictionary is bundled with the app. Daily mode and leaderboard features require a network connection to fetch the daily board and sync scores.

How do I report an inappropriate username?

Email hello@decagram.ca with the username and we'll review it promptly. You can also use the report button on any leaderboard entry by long-pressing the row.
